Orioles Pitcher’s Find Out He's Opening Day Starter In Adorable Way (Video)

Zach Eflin didn't hear he’d be the Orioles' Opening Day starter from longtime manager Brandon Hyde. Instead, the honor was delivered by his biggest supporters—his family.

On Friday, the Orioles announced that Eflin will start the season opener on March 27 in Toronto against the Blue Jays. But before the news broke publicly, Eflin was called into Hyde’s office, handed an iPad, and greeted by a surprise: his wife, Lauren, and their four young children.

In a video shared by the Orioles, Lauren set up the big moment with a dramatic countdown.

The kids, however, had other ideas—excitedly yelling "BLAST OFF!" instead of revealing their dad’s new role.

“That is amazing ... Thank you guys so much for that ... This is so cool,” Eflin said, smiling in the clip.

The family moment was briefly hijacked when one of Eflin’s kids swiped the phone to chat with him personally before being ushered off with promises of “big hugs in a couple days” by her father.

Orioles front office members said they wanted to make the moment special by including Eflin’s family.

Eflin, originally drafted by the San Diego Padres, bounced around the league before carving out a role in the Phillies’ rotation. He landed in Baltimore via a July 2024 trade and now finds himself with the coveted Opening Day nod.

With the Orioles, Eflin went 5-2 with a 2.60 ERA in nine games with a K/BB ratio of 47:11, which was good for a 1.7 WAR.

“I appreciate you guys,” Eflin said. “It’s an honor.”
