A Maryland State Police helicopter proved critical in rescuing a group of kayakers who became stranded in rough waters in the Potomac River on Sunday afternoon. At around 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, Maryland State Police Aviation Command based out of Frederick came to the aid of four kayakers with an assist on the ground from Montgomery County swift water rescue personnel, officials say. First responders in Maryland came to the rescue of a group of swimmers who found themselves in a perilous position on Sunday afternoon, officials say. Ten people were removed from the Potomac River by crews in Montgomery County and Fairfax County after they were stranded on an island and their kayak went rogue and floated downstream. A 67-year-old man is facing nearly two decades in prison after admitting to rape and sexual assault for a pair of attacks dating back to 1981 in Montgomery County, authorities announced on Friday. Marion Pearson, now living in North Carolina, pleaded guilty on Oct. 4 to second-degree rape and sex assault for the attacks of two victims in April and June 1981. Seven people and a baby were displaced by an early morning fire that is believed to have broken out in a family's garage in Montgomery County.
