Police pulled over a car on King Street just after 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, because the vehicle's registration was revoked for having no insurance, Northampton police said. But the routine traffic stop quickly escalated when officers found a large amount of suspected heroin and cocaine inside the car. Police didn't release the driver or passenger's names.
Officers arrested the 53-year-old passenger without incident, but the 23-year-old driver refused to go down easy, police said. He thrashed and resisted arrest from multiple cops as he tried to get back into the car, Northampton police said.
A tow truck driver from Ernie's Towing saw the scuffle and realized the officers needed help. He threw himself headlong into the fight to assist officers to wrestle the 23-year-old to the ground so police could put him in handcuffs, authorities said.
Thankfully, the suspect wasn't able to get back into the car because police found a loaded gun with 13 rounds of ammunition along with 90 grams of suspected cocaine, 250 bags of what they believe is heroin, $2,700 in cash, two scales, eight cell phones, a rifle sight, and body armor, police said.
The 23-year-old is being held on a $50,000 bond and is facing more than a dozen charges. The older man, who is charged with drug offenses, was being held on $25,000 bail, police said.
