The sign out front of the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Springfield was defaced around Tuesday, April 27, with the words on the sign spray-painted over with black painted graffiti.

At the time of the incident, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said the incident was "just plain terrible."

"What is wrong with our society to deface a House of Worship! I have spoken to Rev. Dr. W.C. Watson of Canaan Baptist Church to offer my and our city assistance to clean up this desecration," he said.

The mayor also directed the city's police department to pursue an investigation and review area video camera systems to catch the culprits.

By Thursday, April 29, the sign had been cleaned up by the city's graffiti removal specialist Mike Cass, aka ‘The Eraser!’, Sarno said.

"Mike is so dedicated to this cause 24/7," the mayor added. "Rev. Dr. W.C. Watson, the congregation of Canaan Baptist Church of Christ, and I are so very appreciative of Mike and our City’s efforts. Now let’s catch the culprit(s) and send a message that justice must be served.”

An investigation is underway by the police department.
