Here's When Most People Will Travel For The Holidays In Greater Boston Area

Traveling before and after the holidays can cause more headaches than trying to figure out what to serve your in-laws for Christmas dinner. Thankfully, this is one scenario where an instruction manual does exist, and it comes in the form of a AAA travel report.

The agency predicts more than 112 million people will travel 50 miles or more away from home between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2. Aside from being up 3.6 million from last year, 2022 is expected to be the third busiest year for holiday travel since AAA started tracking in 2000.

The agency also predicts that more than 90 percent of people will travel by car. So while you're transporting all those presents, you might want to consider the best time to hit the roads.

For Santas and Mrs. Clauses riding through the Boston metropolitan area, AAA says to avoid I-93 South from Albany Street in Boston to the start of MA-24 in Randolph as much as possible. That stretch of road is said to experience peak congestion between 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, according to AAA.

In addition, the most popular days for holiday travel are the Friday before Christmas and as well Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Wednesday, Dec. 28. Travel on Monday, Jan. 2 is also expected to be heavy as travelers and commuters will intermingle.

Nationwide, drivers could see travel times up to 25 percent longer, AAA reports. If you want know more about when to schedule your trip, click here.
