The bomb threat was called into the hospital around 8 p.m., WCVB reported. Boston police set up a perimeter on surrounding streets and blocked anyone from entering the building. Though people could leave if they wanted, the report said.
Bomb squads searched the building with dogs trained to sniff out explosives before police gave the all-clear around 10 p.m., and families were allowed back inside the building, Boston.com reported. Authorities didn't provide any details about the threat other than how it was delivered.
While most bomb threats are hoaxes, this one came at a fraught time for the world-renown facility. Children's Hospital is the target of online misinformation attacks that said doctors there were performing elective gender-reassignment surgeries on underage patients. For weeks, doctors and administrators have been the target of an increasing harassment campaign.
The hospital said it provides therapy and treatment for underage transgender children, but those are reversible. Surgeries are only performed on adults.
“Age 18 is used to reflect the standard age of majority for medical decision-making," officials said in a statement earlier this month. "Boston Children’s does not perform genital surgeries as part of gender-affirming care on a patient under the age of 18."
