The manhunt began following a mass shooting on Wednesday night, Oct. 25, that happened at two locations in Lewiston, Maine, leaving 18 killed and more than a dozen injured.

In the aftermath of the incident, Massachusetts State Police have been in regular contact with authorities in Maine regarding the status of the fugitive suspect, identified as 40-year-old Robert Card.

Although state police said there is no confirmed connection between Card and Massachusetts, they are monitoring all available intelligence for any developments, authorities announced on Thursday, Oct. 26.

Additionally, State Police Colonel John Mawn has been in contact with authorities in Maine and other states in New England regarding the possible deployment of Massachusetts state police resources if needed to help apprehend Card.

"The full complement of Massachusetts State Police assets stand ready for deployment if requested, as necessitated by the evolving investigation and fugitive apprehension mission," said state police spokesperson Dave Procopio.

So far, a Massachusetts State Trooper assigned to the organization's Bomb Squad and his K9 partner have been sent to the Lewiston area to help with the effort. State Police have also sent several patrols to the Massachusetts/New Hampshire state line to look out for Card's white Subaru. This was done out of caution, as there is no evidence indicating Card is bound for Massachusetts, police said.

State police are also aware of a Be On the Look Out alert broadcast sent to departments in Massachusetts urging them to be aware of a vehicle possibly connected to the mass shooting. This originated in New Hampshire when a civilian told authorities they had seen an occupant of the vehicle who looked like Card. Despite this, the sighting is "unsubstantiated," according to state police.

In their announcement on Thursday, state police added that if there is a confirmed threat to Massachusetts, they will notify the public.

"As always, we remind the public to call 911 immediately to report anyone or anything suspicious," Procopio said.
