The Lexington Police Department shared a photo of a boa constrictor they believed to be loose in the Center area of Lexington, behind CVS, saying they thought it to be an escaped or released pet, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 26.

"Can you please send one of those calls out to the residents?" asked one commenter on the post. "It would be a good idea for people with small kids & dogs during the summer to know there's a boa lurking."

The post described the snake as "very docile," and said that an animal control officer had been in contact with Mass Wildlife about the rogue serpent.

Mass Wildlife said the snake does not pose a threat but that it should not be touched or approached.

Plans were made for the animal control officer and Mass Wildlife to collaborate to find and capture the boa constrictor.

Police explained that the whole incident had been a miscommunication in an update released on Thursday.

A person brought their pet snake to the area and placed it on the ground to let people see it and take pictures of it, police said.

Some photos from the interaction were shared in a text chain between Lexington kids. A "concerned" parent saw the photos, mistakenly believed the snake to be roaming freely, and contacted the Lexington Animal Control Officer.

The snake was confirmed to have been taken away by its owners after the photo op.
