Fabian Rosario, age 21, allegedly hit the officer in the face with a liquor bottle on High Street in Springfield on July 12, 2022, the Hampden County District Attorney's Office said on Facebook.
The officer was part of a multi-department operation to deter drug dealing, firearms activity and prostitution in several areas throughout the city, the DA's Office continued.
Rosario also allegedly threw a rock at the officer while he ran away. As the officer chased after the group Rosario was with, another man, later identified as 26-year-old Luis Morales, tried tripping the officer and reached into his fanny pack at the corner of Myrtle Street, the office said.
In that moment, other officers arrived and Morales dropped his fanny pack and ran away. Inside police found a loaded gun and Morales' identification. He was arrested later that day after crashing his vehicle on the 800 block of Worthington Street and being hospitalized with serious injuries.
With the indictment, Rosario was charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and assault by means of a dangerous weapon, the office said.
Meanwhile Morales was charged with carrying a firearm without license loaded, assault with dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license loaded, improper storage of a firearm and reckless operation of motor vehicle.
Both are expected to be arraigned in Hampden Superior Court at a later date, the office said.
