Multiple rescue crews responded to the reported drowning at Vernon's Pit around 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, Massachusetts State Police said.
It was there that the man was swimming with his friends and even jumped from a high rock into the water in the quarry, police said. At that point, the man did not resurface.
After two hours, the victim was pulled from the water. Crews performed CPR on the victim but were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to police.
Swimming is prohibited in Vernon's Pit, Nelson's Pit, and at the Klondike Reservoir, the Gloucester Times reports. The incident remains under investigation.
