Cats, Guinea Pigs Perish In Maryland Basement Blaze: State Fire Marshal Several family pets were killed when a fire broke out in a Maryland home over the weekend, though the homeowner and residents were able to avoid injury. Shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, members of the LaVale Volunteer Fire Department were called to a Rye Street home to investigate a basement fire that had broken out unexpectedly, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
