Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police announced on Tuesday, Jan. 31 that DC resident Harold Barnes has been charged with the armed robbery of a US Postal carrier last week in the 800 block of Hudson Avenue in Silver Spring.

The joint investigation by detectives from the department and US Postal Inspection Service determined that the mailman was delivering mail on Hudson Avenue on Monday, Jan. 23 when he was approached by Barnes.

It is alleged that Barnes approached him, pointed a gun at him, and demanded the property, to which he complied. Barnes then left the scene.

Last weekend, police say that officers from the Arlington County Police Department conducted a traffic stop of a stolen 2017 Hyundai Tucson and arrested the driver, who was later identified as Barnes.

A search of Barnes led to the recovery of stolen property belonging to his victim, as well as “items of evidentiary value inside of the stolen Hyundai.”

Barnes was arrested and is being held at a correctional facility in Arlington without bond. He is set to be extradited back to Montgomery County, where he will be charged with:

  • Armed robbery;
  • First-degree assault;
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.

No initial court date was announced by police.
