Bryans Road resident Danshell Evon is facing decades in prison in connection to the death of 3-year-old Dreamie Dior Jackson, who was killed in May 2022 when her mother struck a pick-up truck and she was improperly secured in a backless booster seat.
According to court documents, Evon was driving a Kia Optima south on Connecticut Avenue near Atherton Drive with her two 13-year-old children and Jackson early on May 12, 2022, when she struck a Ford F-150.
Both occupants in the truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries, as well as Evon and her teen children. Jackson died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Police said that during the investigation into the fatal crash, Evon was clocked driving in excess of 98mph in the seconds before colliding with the pick-up truck. It was later determined that Jackson was improperly secured in a backless booster seat which contributed to her death.
Evon was convicted following a four-day bench trial and found guilty of gross negligent manslaughter, four counts of second-degree assault, and neglect of a minor on Friday, April 5.
“This heartbreaking loss of such a young member of our community is a tragedy that was easily avoidable. At the speeds the defendant was traveling, she wasn’t driving a car, she was steering a missile down the road in the middle of rush hour," Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy said.
"If the barest of common-sense parenting skills were in place, there would have been a proper child safety seat installed."
Evon is scheduled to be sentenced in August, when she will face up to 55 years in prison.
