With an assist from her “lucky penny,” a 48-year-old woman from Silver Spring claimed a $50,000 prize on a “Lucky Times 10” scratch-off lottery ticket, which she called her “lucky game.”

She said that she “usually tries to stay low-key” at her job, but when she realized her new cash windfall, she couldn’t keep her excitement in check, startling some of her nearby co-workers.

“I started to scream and had to shut my door. My co-workers asked me if I was okay,” she said laughing. “I still can’t believe it.”

Once she caught her breath, the woman said that she was able to call her daughter and husband to celebrate the unexpected good news.

The lucky Lottery player says she regularly plays scratch-off tickets as a hobby, and largely credited her latest win on a specific penny she uses to scratch them all off.

She said that she’s a fan of the $10 “Lucky Times 10” game, and she’s had limited luck in the past, claiming $100 and $500 prizes before upping the ante to her $50,000 victory.

With her winnings, the woman said that she and her husband are going to use the cash to renovate a recently purchased condo.

The winning ticket was sold at Giant on Hungerford Drive in Rockville, which will receive a $500 bonus.
