Edgewood resident Xavier Alexander Stanfield, 30, who is no stranger to clashing with law enforcement, is facing decades in prison after being convicted of new charges for dealing drugs in the region after he was busted by an undercover officer.
"The jury in this case confirmed that Xavier Stanfield is a drug dealer, and this verdict is a huge win for Harford County," State's Attorney Alison Healey, who personally prosecuted the case, said.
"Through his behavior in this case, Stanfield demonstrated that he has no respect for the laws of our community, or the law enforcement officers that risk their lives daily to enforce them."
In August 2022, a detective from the Harford County Sheriff's Office who was working undercover spotted Stanfield - who had multiple warrants out for his arrest - in his hometown, prompting a call to backup so they could take him into custody.
According to a spokesperson from the Harford County State's Attorney's Office, Stanfield was trailed to the area of Clover Valley Way, where he parked, and fled on foot when they noticed officers closing in on him.
Stanfield was eventually caught, prosecutors say, but he refused to go down quietly and continued to resist his arrest until officers deployed a taser device to take him down.
He wasn't done yet.
Following his arrest, officials say that Stanfield was waiting for paramedics to respond and evaluate him when he fled the area again while still handcuffed before they could remove the probes from the taser.
A second foot pursuit was launched, prosecutors say, and Stanfield was taken back into custody for good.
During a search of Stanfield's vehicle, investigators recovered a clear plastic bag with crack cocaine and $1,070 in cash from the pocket of a bag that was found on the front seat.
Officers also seized a digital scale with a white powder residue on it.
"Expert testimony confirmed that all the facts and circumstances in this case indicated that Stanfield possessed the cocaine with an intent to distribute and further explained that the weight of the crack cocaine recovered was approximately 80-times that of a single use amount," prosecutors said.
Stanfield was found guilty following a two-day trial of:
- Possession with intent to distribute narcotics;
- Resisting arrest;
- Obstructing and hindering;
- Second-degree escape.
He is being held at the Harford County Detention Center pending his sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
"The State will be seeking a sentence which will span over two decades for Stanfield for this case alone, as he is a repeat felony drug offender," Healey added.
"In addition, this conviction triggers a violation of probation in two separate cases, and we will be seeking that the balance of those sentences be imposed consecutively to his sentence in this case.
"These requests are vital to ensure our community is protected from Stanfield for years to come."
