One Hospitalized When Tent Fire Breaks Out In Elkton Homeless Encampment

One person was hospitalized when a fire broke out in a homeless encampment in Maryland, authorities announced.

In Cecil County, first responders were dispatched to the 400 block of Booth Street in Elkton shortly before 4:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, where there was a reported fire in a tent within the encampment.

Members of the Elkton Police Department were first on the scene, and “were able to extinguish the majority of the fire with fire extinguishers,” according to the office of the state fire marshal, until crews from the Singerly Fire Company arrived to completely knock down the flames.

Officials said that one man was transported to ChristianaCare Union Hospital for unspecified injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No other injuries were reported. It caused an estimated $200 in damage, according to the fire marshal.
