Retired Naval Officer Faces Long Recovery After Breaking Bones During Maryland Bike Race It’s going to be a long road ahead for a Maryland biker and retired Naval officer who was struck by a car during a popular race in Frederick County and suffered grievous injuries. Community support is swelling for 34-year-old Matthew Pierson who had to be airlifted to the UMMC Shock Trauma in Baltimore with severe injuries that included a host of broken bones that he will be recovering from for months after being hit during the Gran Fondo event early on Sunday, Sept. 17.
