A routine traffic stop was anything but routine after the driver tried to escape, crashing into a utility pole, and starting a car fire in Berkshire County, authorities said.
Anthony Winters, age 27, of Pittsfield, was charged with several motor vehicle offenses and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Pittsfield police said.
It all began around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, when police went to pull over Winters' car in the area of West and Edwin Streets. He stopped momentarily but then floored it, hitting an officer as he tried to make his getaway.

Police have identified the three men who were injured after the truck they were in crashed into a tree in Berkshire County on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 9.
Anthony Nichols, age 41, Gregory Prince, 54, and Robert O'Bert, 50, all of Pittsfield, had to be cut from the truck after it crashed at 241 South St. in Pittsfield near the intersection of Broad Street just after 3:30 p.m., Pittsfield police said.

A 26-year-old New York man who was hit while crossing a street in Berkshire County on Friday, Nov. 3, has died, police said.
Noor Khan Zadran, of Albany, was crossing Central Berkshire Boulevard in Pittsfield around 3:30 p.m. when he was struck by a Hyundai Sonata driven by Judith Daly, age 85, police announced Tuesday morning.

A western Massachusetts district attorney said he is stunned by the amount of methamphetamines that police recently seized during a raid, and he thinks it may be the biggest such bust there ever.
Alan J. Ramos, of Pittsfield, was arrested earlier this week after police raided his 29 Alden Ave. home on Tuesday, Jan. 10, and found 90 grams of meth, 45 grams of heroin, 30 grams of cocaine, and $6,000 cash, the Berkshire District Attorney's Office said. The prosecutor estimates that drugs have a street value of $31,500.
