Erin has just become first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season.
The National Hurricane Center made the announcement in its 11 a.m. update on Friday, Aug. 15.
Erin, which started the day as a tropical storm, is churning north of Puerto Rico, with its projected path steering between Bermuda and the US East Coast, and the core expected to pass near or north of the Leeward Islands on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Tropical Storm Erin is gaining strength over the open Atlantic, with forecasters warning that the system could soon become one of the most powerful storms of the year, with parts of the East Coast potentially in its eventual path.
Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center and AccuWeather expect Erin to reach major hurricane strength this weekend, likely on Saturday, Aug. 16, as it passes north of the Leeward Islands, with the Bermuda High helping steer it toward open waters.

Severe Storms, Possible Tornadoes Fueled By Beryl's Remnants To Hit Northeast: Timing, Track
Numerous clusters of severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and possible isolated tornadoes fueled by the remnants of Beryl are headed to the Northeast.
Beryl, which made landfall along the Texas coast as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday, July 8, will move into upstate New York and northern New England on Wednesday, July 10, starting late in the afternoon and continuing overnight.
The most severe storms on Wednesday are expected in areas marked in orange and yellow in the image above, mainly farther north and west of the I-95 corridor.
