As of 8:15 a.m. on Monday, March 17, the system is generating widespread rainfall and thunderstorms as a strong cold front advances. (See the radar image above.)
A total of 52 tornadoes have been reported, with more possible, alongside multiple wildfires and a significant dust storm in the Southwest and Midwest, according to AccuWeather.
Overall, the storm has affected 20 states and impacted about one-third of the nation’s population. Missouri has experienced the most deaths, with 12, while Kansas follows with eight fatalities due to a pileup involving 71 vehicles on I-70, where blowing dust created dangerously low visibility.
Precipitation from the storm is expected to diminish later this morning. Conditions will remain mostly cloudy throughout St. Patrick’s Day, with gradual clearing overnight. Expect mostly sunny and mild weather on Tuesday, March 18, and Wednesday, March 19.
