More Rabid Raccoons Found In Boston A fifth raccoon has tested positive in Boston for rabies, Boston Animal Care and Control announced on Facebook Friday, Aug. 18.  This one was found near Hillside Avenue in Mission Hill. Three others were found in Jamaica Plain, and another was picked up in Roslindale.  Rabies is transmitted through scratches and bites from infected animals. Woodchuck Found At Ice Cream Shop Sparks Rabies Concerns In Mass Community A small, furry mammal that is considered a high-risk animal for rabies transmission is causing a town's police department and Board of Health to attempt to locate a person who handled one such critter.  An unknown person is said to have picked up a woodchuck, found at John George Ice Cream in Dartmouth around 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 11, and placed it in a cardboard box, according to Christopher Michaud, Director of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Gloucester Fox Tests Positive For Rabies, Pet Owners Urged To Stay Vigilant A fox found in Gloucester tested positive earlier this month for rabies, and state and local officials are asking people to stay vigilant outdoors.  The Massachusetts Public Health Department said the fox was found near 86 Concord St. on Aug. 10.  Anyone who thinks they may have come in contact with the animal should contact the Massachusetts Department of Public Health at 617-983-6800 immediately.  Rabies is transferred through bites, scratches, and saliva and can make an animal aggressive and confrontational.
