Brookline High School was evacuated after the irritant was reported coming from a first-floor bathroom near the school's cafeteria on Thursday morning, Nov. 3, Brookline Public Schools said.
At least tow students and two staff members were taken to a local hospital for treatment and anyone else impacted was treated onsite, BPS added. All other schools and facilities in the surrounding area were unaffected and classes ended early.
First responders were called to the scene and helped clear and ventilate the area. After monitoring the school's air quality, Brookline Public Health and Boston Hazmat deemed BHS safe and that it would reopen on Friday for classes to resume normally.
As an extra precaution, BPS was advising people to contact their healthcare provider if they experience any throat irritation or other respiratory symptoms.
