A 2-year-old died at a Cohasset auto body shop on Thursday, Aug. 31, according to David Traub, the communications director for the Norfolk District Attorney's Office. An initial investigation suggests a machinery part fell on the child in the area where mechanics were working on a piece of heavy equipment.
The person operating the equipment carried the child to a nearby police station, and they rushed the boy to South Shore Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, according to the DA's office.
The incident remains under investigation, but initial reviews suggest this was a tragic accident, Traub said. Though the Office of Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on the child, and OSHA will investigate as well.
Cohasset Chief of Police William Quigley said in a press conference that the boy's grandfather was the one who carried him to the police station. Quigley added his officers were deeply affected by the child's death, and one was sent home.
Quigley asked Cohasset residents to rally around the boy's family and do all they can to help those involved.
