Driver Killed By Falling Tree In Western Mass
A 75-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning, July 19, after a tree uprooted and fell in front of his pick-up truck in Franklin County, authorities said. William Mattei, of Leicester, was driving west on Petersham Road (Route 122) near the intersection of Sweezy Lane when the tree crashed directly into the path of his 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, state police said. A female passenger took the controls of a small plane that departed from New York and crash-landed on Martha's Vineyard Island after the pilot suffered a medical emergency, according to Massachusetts State Police. State police have identified the man killed in a Friday, July 7, motorcycle versus SUV crash on I-91 in Springfield as a 23-year-old father from the city. Dayquan Miguel Ortiz died after his motorcycle slammed into the back of a Jeep just after 2 p.m. near mile marker 7 in the southbound lane of the highway, state police said on Monday. The Worcester County District Attorney's Office is investigating an "unattended death" at the Sterling Police Station last week. "Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and Sterling Police continue to investigate the June 23 unattended death at the Sterling Police Department," a spokesperson for the district attorney said. After a nearly five-day search, the body of a 20-year-old canoer who went overboard in Westfield's Pequot Pond was found on Sunday, June 25. The East Longmeadow man was on the pond with two friends on Wednesday night, June 22, when it capsized, tossing them all into the water. Two men swam to shore, but the third man never resurfaced. An undercover prostitution sting in Hampden County earlier this week ended with 11 men being arrested for soliciting sex, authorities said.
