Teen Who Drowned In Western Mass Pond ID'd; Community Rallies Around Family The 14-year-old girl who drowned in a pond in Berkshire County last week was remembered as a smart, caring, and intelligent person with a promising future.  Earl Giver Essien was found unresponsive at Benedict Pond at Beartown State Forest in Great Barrington just before 2 p.m. on July 17. School Superintendent In Western Mass Abruptly Resigns A popular school superintendent in Western Massachusetts will be unexpectedly leaving his position at the end of the academic year as he pursues other opportunities in education. Hatfield School Superintendent Martin McEvoy announced this week that he will be stepping away from the district as of Wednesday, June 30 after a year and a half of navigating the district through the COVID-19 crisis.
