Rapidly Strengthening New Tropical Storm Expected To Become First Hurricane Of Season
A newly named, rapidly strengthening tropical storm is likely to become the first hurricane of the 2024 season. Tropical Storm Beryl, the second named storm since the season began on Saturday, June 1, is now located about 820 miles east-southeast of Barbados. It has maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour and is moving west at 23 miles per hour. A tornado touched down in New York State during a round of severe storms, the National Weather Service has announced following a survey of the damage. The tornado hit the village of West Winfield in southern Herkimer County late Saturday morning, June 22. It's about 60 miles east of Syracuse and 85 miles west of Albany. What could be one of the most active hurricane seasons ever now has its first named storm. Tropical Storm Alberto formed late Wednesday morning, June 19 as it moved across the western Gulf of Mexico. Heavy rain, coastal flooding, and gusty winds are forecast along the coasts of Texas and northeastern Mexico through Thursday, June 20. Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued in those areas. Get set for what could potentially be one of the most active hurricane seasons ever, according to a brand-new forecast by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasters at the Climate Prediction Center.
