'Barbaric Attack': 2 Men Who Burned Victim During Springfield Home Invasion Sentenced
Two men found guilty of torturing and permanently disfiguring a Springfield man during a 2019 home invasion were sentenced to decades in prison on Thursday, June 27, authorities said.
Paul Gayle, 30, and Malik Erskine, 24, both of Springfield, were found guilty of multiple violent felonies in the "barbaric attack," Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni. Markendall Johnson, now 21, who was charged as a youthful offender because of his age on the day of the robbery, was also convicted in the case.

A woman in Danvers told police that a Lawrence man raped her while holding a butcher knife, authorities said.
Rene Montes, 55, of Lawrence, was arrested on Thursday morning, Dec. 21, in Methuen and charged with aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, State Police said.
The woman told troopers that she had been assaulted and raped in her Danvers home shortly before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20. She said the man held her down against her will while holding a meat clever.

Suffolk County prosecutors made their opening statements Friday, Dec. 8, in the trial of a Boston woman who is accused of driving over her friend during an argument, leading to injuries that would cause her death.
Amara Smothers, 47, of Mattapan, is accused of killing Darnella Grossett-Kellam, 51, a woman she had known for several years, during a heated argument in March 2017, the prosecutor said.
