Anthony Ramos, 28, of Dorchester, was arrested and charged this week with the killing of 19-year-old Tywon Meeks on July 6 at 5 Leyland Street, the Suffolk County District Attorney. He is charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, and carrying a loaded firearm.

Ramos was already in custody after police busted him last week on a firearms charge, the prosecutor added.

Officers arrived at the scene on a hot July night just before midnight and found Meeks on the ground. He was already dead, the prosecutor said.

His killing sparked outrage and condemnation of violence from city leaders.

“To call the violent death of a 19-year-old a tragedy is somehow insufficient to the horror and loss that the reality entails," Suffolk County DA Kevin Hayden said. "There is no closure or finality to the grief and anguish being felt by Tywon’s family and friends. There are only memories of his far-too-short life and the pursuit of justice for his far-too-early death."

Meeks' family said he was quick with a joke, had a flair for fashion, and loved helping others.

"He was a compassionate soul and a true friend who went out of his way to support those in need," his obituary read. "Whether it was lending a hand to a neighbor or volunteering at the local community center, Tywon's selflessness touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on his community."
