A new East Boston business, Blue Caboose Ice Cream and Coffee, is finishing up construction on the Conrail Caboose at the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway, the brand told Daily Voice.

The aptly-named business will serve up ice cream and coffee items out of, you guessed it, a blue caboose.

The Conrail Railroad company donated the caboose to the City of Boston. The city solicited bids for the space in 2021, with Blue Caboose beating out the competition.

The caboose's location at the Greenway once served as a busy railroad corridor, building East Boston's legacy as a center of commerce, according to a historic sign in the area.

"A similar caboose was often stationed close by and served as a kitchen facility for dock workers unloading ships at the adjacent East Boston Piers," the sign reads.

"We will serve the Eastie community out of it once more," said the Blue Caboose on its Instagram page.

Blue Caboose plans to open in July 2023, once construction on the caboose is completed.
