The former mayor of Les Irois, Haiti, who lost a civil lawsuit this week for alleged human rights abuses — including murder and torture, is now facing charges he lied on his immigration papers when he moved to Malden, federal authorities said.
Jean Morose Viliena, 50, was charged on Wednesday, March 22, with three counts of visa fraud, the US Attorney for Massachusetts said.
Viliena served as mayor of Les Irois from 2006 until 2010 and is accused of using violence to exert his political will, the prosecutor said.

Two men were found guilty of first-degree murder for a 2020 shooting death of a 35-year-old father from Lynn in what prosecutors said was "an unjustified attack," according to officials.
Tyrell Junior Berberena, 27, of Malden and Marcus Carlisle, 25, of Lynn were convicted of 13 counts in connection with the shooting death of Noe Hernandez on Tuesday, March 14, the Essex County District Attorney's Office reports. A lottery player solved the puzzles on a scratch-off ticket and was rewarded with a $1 million prize.
Paul Fletcher, of Malden, won the Massachusetts State Lottery’s “$5,000,000 100X Cashword” second-highest prize on Tuesday, Jan. 31, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery.
Fletcher chose to cash his prize out, receiving a one-time payment of $650,000 before taxes.
The winning ticket was purchased at Sunnyhurst Farms located at 19 Lebanon Street. The store will get a $10,000 bonus for its part in the big prize.
