Patriot Ambulance shared the news of "Uncle" Mike Bernard's passing on Facebook only a few days after the seasoned first responder was suddenly diagnosed with cancer.

"It’s with broken hearts that we announce that Mike's time on this earth was cut short, as he passed today surrounded by his family," the post from Sunday, Jan. 8 reads.

"Mike, you will always be remembered as a true hero and a shining example of what it means to be a family man, paramedic, a coworker and a friend. You will be deeply missed, but your memory will live on forever."

His fellow first responders launched the campaign to support Bernard's as they cared for him during his time of need. The last update from the GoFundMe hinted at Mike's rapidly deteriorating condition.

"If you are able to text Mike, he is receiving them but is too weak to respond but continue to do so as he is grateful for them," the campaign read. "You have helped ease parts of his worries and he very much appreciates all of you for that. They truly thank you for the love."

The fundraiser is still seeking donations to reach its $50,000 goal. People interested in donating can do so by clicking here
