Devoted Yonkers Father Dies After Aggressive Cancer Returns: 'Free Spirit' Yonkers resident Derek Leach was known as a much-loved father, brother, and friend before his death following a brave battle with cancer.  Leach, who was recently diagnosed with throat cancer in the summer of 2024, fought valiantly through aggressive treatments. The incident happened on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Peekskill Middle School, when a lockdown alarm was triggered "by error," according to a message from the district.  Police responded to the school and cleared the building, officials added.  "All students at all schools are safe and instruction is continuing as normal," district officials said.

Fires Go Up At Condo Complex, Home On Same Night In Carmel Firefighters in a Putnam County town were kept busy with blazes at a condominium complex and residence on the same night. The fires happened in Carmel on Saturday night, Jan. 11, the town's fire department said on Tuesday, Jan. 14.  The first occurred at the Kings Grant Condominiums, where a cooking fire began in an appliance. Ed Board Votes To Close 3 Schools In Mount Vernon District officials have voted to close three schools in a Westchester County city while reorganizing grade levels at other buildings. In a special meeting held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Mount Vernon Board of Education voted 5-4 to close the Mount Vernon Leadership Academy, Cecil H.
