Tesla has recalled 376,241 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The Teslas are at risk of losing their power steering assist.
A flaw in the printed circuit board of the electronic power steering assist could cause power steering failure when the vehicle stops and then accelerates again.
"A loss of power steering assist can require greater steering effort, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash," the NHTSA said.
As of Friday, Jan. 10, the NHTSA said Tesla has identified 3,012 warranty claims and 570 field reports that may be linked to the issue. Tesla claims it had no reports of crashes related to the defect.
To fix the problem, Tesla has released a free over-the-air software update to owners. The company will mail notification letters by Tuesday, Mar. 25.
The recall comes as Tesla faces increased scrutiny for safety concerns and mounting recalls.
In January, the NHTSA launched an investigation into 2.5 million Teslas over crashes involving the "Actually Smart Summon" feature, which allows vehicles to move remotely through a smartphone app. The system failed to detect obstacles in multiple reported incidents.
Tesla also recalled nearly 240,000 vehicles across Model X, Model Y, Model S, and Model 3 lineups in December 2024. A rearview camera defect violated federal visibility standards and increased crash risks.
The NHTSA also began probing 2.4 million Teslas in October 2024 and the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. The feature was linked to at least four crashes, one of which was deadly.
The wave of safety issues has happened as Tesla stock has dropped 10 percent so far in 2025, Reuters reported. Tesla has also faced boycotts and protests due to billionaire CEO Elon Musk's moves to gut federal agencies as leader of the Department of Government Efficiency, an organization not approved by Congress.
Owners of affected 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles should ensure their software is updated. They can also check their vehicle identification number on Tesla's website or the NHTSA database for recall details.
For more information about the rearview camera recall, Tesla owners can call the company's customer service hotline at 1-877-798-3752 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
