A former Weymouth police officer who was caught on video camera beating a handcuffed suspect will not serve any jail time, federal authorities said. Justin Chappell, 43, was sentenced to two years of supervised release, with the first six months to be spent under house arrest, the US Attorney for Massachusetts said on Tuesday, July 16. He must also complete 40 hours of community service each year of his supervised release. Offensive Facebook Post On Police Page Is Hacker Hoax, Central Mass Chief Says
An incendiary post on a Worcester County police department's Facebook page about trans people was not written by an officer, the chief promised on Wednesday, Aug. 2. They were hacked. The post appeared on the Hopedale Police Department's page on Tuesday night, claiming that an officer had shot a trans woman after she showed him her genitals. The agency responsible for state police standards announced it had suspended a Springfield officer after he was charged with assault, authorities said. Jeffrey Alicea was among four officers suspended on Thursday, May 4, by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission. That brings the total of Massachusetts officers removed from duty to 28.
