Children Caught Speeding At 90 MPH In Stolen Cars In Western Mass
A group of 15-year-olds and 14-year-olds went are lucky to be alive after taking a joyride early Thursday morning, June 15, in stolen Hyundais at speeds over 90 miles per hour before crashing in Hampden County, authorities said. The four teens in four stolen cars were clocked around 3:45 a.m. speeding down Boston Road in Springfield, police said. The vehicles weaved across the yellow line multiple times, and two of the cars didn't have their headlights on, meaning they were practically invisible to oncoming traffic, authorities added. As Thefts Of 2 Car Brands Spikes, Western Mass Police Urge Owners To Update Security Software
After a series of viral social media videos earlier this year exposed a security flaw in models of Hyundai and Kia cars that make them easier to steal, there has been a spike in thefts of those vehicles. The "Kia Boyz" trend showed how some cars could be easily hot-wired using a USB cable. In Springfield, a dozen Hyundai and Kia cars were stolen in April, with an additional 13 break-ins, police said. Hundreds of thousands of Kia vehicles are being recalled due to a defect that could cause airbags not to deploy during a potential crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Kia is recalling more than 410,000 vehicles in the US because the airbags could fail to inflate after the issue was first found overseas. Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than 550,000 vehicles in the US that may have turn signals that flash in the opposite direction of what the driver intended. A speeding Kia led to a recent, major drug bust in Franklin County’s only city. On Thursday, Jan. 21, around 7 p.m., State Police Troopers patrolling Route 91 in Greenfield observed a gray Kia sedan allegedly making numerous marked lanes violations while speeding, police said. Troopers flicked on their emergency lights and sirens to get the Kia to pull over, but the vehicle allegedly accelerated and failed to stop for the officers, police said.
