A 5-year-old boy who was seriously burned when a home caught fire in Chicopee on Christmas Eve has died, state officials said on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Fire crews were called to a fire at a multi-family home at 759 Chicopee Street just after noon and were told the boy was trapped inside, the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal's Office said. A dog and two cats lost their lives in a Christmas Eve fire in Chicopee that also displaced about 15 people, fire officials said. Chicopee Fire responded to the fire at 759 Chicopee Street just after noon on Saturday, Dec. 24, Chicopee Fire Chief Dan Stamborski and State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey report. A 35-year-old Springfield man seemingly tried to impress a superior court judge by wearing his "Best Dad Ever" shirt during his arraignment on charges he drove over a Chicopee man last month and left him to die on the side of the road. Authorities announced this week the identity of the man killed in a hit-and-run crash last month in Chicopee, a report said. Though, the person responsible for his death remains at large. Gary Turcotte, 62, of Chicopee was identified by investigators as the man killed in the Nov. 30 crash in the 950 block of Chicopee Street, MassLive reported. Officials have charged a 42-year-old Chicopee man with running over and killing a 68-year-old pedestrian earlier this week, authorities said. Benjamin Goraj is charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and operating under the influence — 3rd offense, Hampden District Attorney's said. A Surprise Sinkhole In Chicopee Is Causing Traffic Snarls In The Area
A sinkhole near the intersection of Ramond Road and Chicopee Street has caused traffic snarls in the area. The hole first appeared the morning of July 14 when the paved road gave way and a parked car sank about halfway into the hole. No one was injured in the surprise incident, said Erin Hastings, executive director of Westcomm Regional Dispatch. It is not clear what caused the sinkhole to open, but Hastings said dispatch was made aware of a nearby water main break that may have had something to do with it. The water main was repaired by 1 p.m.
