Scammers Posing As Well-Known Businesses, Agencies: Here's What To Know, Feds Say
Federal authorities are sounding the alarm over scams that impersonate well-known businesses and government agencies. In 2023, data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alone show more than 330,000 reports of business impersonation scams and nearly 160,000 reports of government impersonation scams. That amounts to nearly half the frauds reported directly to the agency, the FTC said. A Boston man on federal supervised release for sex trafficking has been sentenced in a different case for exposing himself to a woman and then trying to stop her from testifying. Mark Pinnock, 32, was sentenced to 33 months followed by three years supervised release on Friday, Jan. 5, after pleading guilty to one county of witness intimidation in October 2023, the US Attorney for Massachusetts said. Federal authorities announced that a recall initially reported in May has been expanded to include an additional 1.7 million travel irons after there were new reports of injuries.
