Northampton Police found a vehicle with "heavy front end damage" at St. Mary's Cemetery around 1:42 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, the department said on Facebook.
Initial investigation determined that the driver, a 19-year-old man from Holyoke, drove off the road and crashed into the cemetery, damaging 19 headstones in the process, police said.
Officers also determined that the driver appeared to be under the influence and placed him under arrest of OUI liquor. He was charged with the following:
- OUI alcohol
- Having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle
- Failure to wear a seatbelt
- Operating at a speed greater than reasonable
No other information was released.
