Responders were originally told that the people showing symptoms had been exposed to epoxy, but firefighters traced the source of the issue to a propane heater causing carbon monoxide to build up, the Southampton Fire Department said.
Southampton authorities called several other area paramedics and firefighting crews to assist with the multiple casualty incident.
No injuries were reported at the scene, but several people were taken to Baystate Medical Center for evaluation because of their level of exposure to the toxic gas. Three patients had severe symptoms, but an update on their conditions was not immediately known.
