The bones belonged to Brian Cornwell, age 57, who was reported missing in 2020, the Northwestern District Attorney's Office said. Investigators are trying to determine how he died.

About 24 students and chaperones with the Westhampton-based summer camp Biocitizen Inc. were exploring Rawson Island — in between Greenfield and Montague — on Aug. 23 when they stumbled on the body, authorities said.

They called Greenfield police, who cordoned off the area until crime scene investigators could arrive.

Authorities ask anyone with information on Cornwell's death or disappearance to contact the Northwestern District Attorney’s Greenfield office at (413) 774-3186.
