Northeast and mid-Atlantic states had mixed results in a new study on the best states for retirement, balancing affordability challenges with strong quality-of-life and healthcare options.
WalletHub released its 2025 list of Best and Worst States to Retire on Monday, Jan. 27. Florida claimed the No. 1 spot, followed by Minnesota, Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota in the top five.

CT's Beardsley Zoo Confirms Avian Flu Case, Euthanizes Birds to Prevent Spread
A deadly strain of avian flu has been detected at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, forcing officials to euthanize birds and shut down exhibits in an effort to stop the spread.
The virus, known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, was confirmed in a deceased Cotton Patch goose found on zoo grounds. In response, the zoo has ramped up safety measures to protect animals, staff, and visitors, working with state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, officials said.

Authorities have charged a 21-year-old Connecticut man following an investigation into allegations of a sexual assault involving a minor in Haddam.
Dylan Martin, of Southington, was arrested at his home without incident Monday morning, Jan. 20, after troopers served an arrest warrant stemming from an incident reported in late Oct. 2024, according to Connecticut State Police.
The investigation began in Nov. 2024, after the Hampden County, Massachusetts, State’s Attorney’s Office notified authorities about the alleged crime.

Northeast and mid-Atlantic states are among the most expensive in the U.S. for smoking tobacco, according to a new study.
New York topped the 2025 list from WalletHub called "The Real Cost of Smoking by State", with residents losing an estimated $5.4 million over their lifetime. Washington, D.C., Maryland, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island were also ranked in the top five.

A six-vehicle crash on I-84 in Connecticut claimed the life of a 29-year-old man, whose family says he was a father to a little girl.
According to CT State Police, a 44-year-old man from Wethersfield was heading east on the highway near Exit 36 in Farmington when he struck the vehicle being operated by Eloi Batista Da Silva, on Sunday, Jan. 12, around 6:05 p.m.
