Former USW President Leo W. Gerard Dies At 78; Labor Leaders Mourn His Loss
The labor movement lost a titan with the death of former United Steelworkers International President Leo W. Gerard, the union announced on Monday, Sept. 22.
Gerard, who led the USW from 2001 to 2019, died on Sunday, Sept. 21, at the age of 78, according to the union.
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis called Gerard “a giant” in a statement, noting the longtime labor leader never lost touch with the workers he represented.

3,200 Boeing Workers Who Build Fighter Jets Begin Strike: What To Know
More than 3,200 Boeing workers have gone on strike after overwhelmingly rejecting a revised four-year contract offer from the company.
The strike affects Boeing facilities in St. Louis and St. Charles, Missouri, as well as Mascoutah, Illinois. Workers there build and maintain critical US defense aircraft and weapons systems, including the F-15 and F/A-18 fighter jets.
IAM District 837 members voted Sunday, Aug. 3, to reject the company's latest proposal, just one week after turning down an earlier version on July 27. The strike officially began at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4.
