Shark Sighting Keeps Swimmers Out Of Water At Several Long Island Beaches
A shark sighting kept swimmers out of the water at three New York beaches. The sighting was reported on Long Island at Nickerson Beach in Nassau County. As a precaution, the town of Hempstead also closed Lido Beach and Malibu Beach for swimmers for a brief period early Saturday afternoon, Aug. 3. Officials said the shark was spotted about 75 feet from the shore. Swimming resumed at the three beaches a short time after the sighting. Surfer Attacked By Shark At NY Beach
Another Long Island beach is closed to swimming after a surfer was bitten by a shark. The incident took place at Smith Point County Beach Park in Shirley, around 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 13, said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. The surfer was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue for treatment of injuries, Bellone said. Pack Of Sharks Spotted Off Long Island Shore, Temporarily Closing Beach
Swimming was temporarily suspended again at a Long Island beach when a pack of sharks was reportedly found feasting on baitfish in the waters. A pack of nearly two dozen sharks was reportedly spotted at approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15 at Davis Park, a Fire Island beach off the coast of Long Island, causing concerns for lifeguards in the area.
