The Brooklyn man was driving south near Exit 39B in Milford around 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, when his Ford Escape veered into a neighboring tractor-trailer, Connecticut state police said.
The impact caused the Ford Escape to spin 180 degrees before crashing into a wire barrier.
The vehicle then careened into an embankment and down a hill, where it struck a tree. The impact was so violent that he was ejected and became pinned against the tree and his SUV's dashboard, police said.
Milford firefighters risked their safety to free him and rush him to an area hospital. Police closed part of the highway for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate.
State police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, has dashcam footage, or has any relevant information to contact Trooper Collin Baker at 203-696-2500 or Collin.Baker@ct.gov.
