Hampshire County resident Haley Kelly-Sherette, age 23, of Williamsburg, will be arraigned Friday, Nov. 5 in connection with the death of 69-year-old Charles Braun.
The investigation revealed Kelly-Sherette failed to stop for a stop sign as she used Facetime while driving, said Laurie Loisel, director of communications for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
Braun, of Northampton, who was bicycling west on Elm Street, passing by its intersection with Woodlawn Avenue when he was hit at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6.
He was pronounced dead at Cooley Dickinson Hospital 30 minutes later.
According to the investigation, Kelly-Sherette was driving south on Woodlawn when she engaged in a 53-second Facetime conversation with a friend, Loisel said.
Her attention was also drawn to her 1-year-old daughter who was crying in the back seat.
She failed to come to a complete stop at Woodlawn’s intersection with Elm and struck Braun.
Kelly-Sherette called 911 and remained on the scene, Loisel said.d
In addition to the homicide charge, she faces failing to stop for a stop sign, and the use of an electronic device (Facetime) while driving charges.
