Matthew Thompson, 44, of Torrington, was arrested just after 12:30 a.m. Friday, March 28, after multiple people called 911 to report his Honda CR-V traveling south in the northbound lanes of Route 8 in Torrington, Connecticut State Police said.

Police caught up with Thompson near Exit 46 after he had turned around and started driving in the correct direction, authorities said.

Thompson smelled strongly of alcohol, had glassy eyes and severe dry mouth, police said. He also failed a field sobriety test.

Police arrested him and charged him with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving the wrong way on a limited access highway, reckless driving, and reckless endangerment in the first degree, authorities said.

Thompson was released on a $5,000 bond, police said.
