Six Arrested, Nine Cops Hospitalized After Protesters Clash With Police In Stamford
Six people were arrested and nine police officers were hospitalized during a clash at a protest in Stamford. The protesters were marching for justice for Steven Barrier, a 23-year-old who died due to a medical emergency while in custody last year. The protest began Saturday afternoon, Aug. 8 at Home Depot and proceeded to the Stamford PD headquarters on Bedford Street. Pitchfork-wielding protesters hit the streets in some of Long Island’s most affluent communities to condemn the rise in income equality. Trumbull Police Provide Support At Protest
Police helped several protestors who were overcome by heat exhaustion during a two-hour vigil to honor George Floyd. Several hundred people turned out at the Fairfield County vigil held at the Trumbull Town Hall gazebo on Saturday, June 6, said Trumbull Police Lt. Brian Weir. This protest vigil remained peaceful throughout and took place without any vandalism or acts of violence, Weir said. Roadway Reopens After Large Protest
This story has been updated. A stretch of I-84 has reopened after hundreds protesting police-related deaths entered the highway. The closure, in both directions, was between exits 4 and 5 in Danbury on Wednesday, June 3 and lasted about an hour, starting just before 2:30 p.m. The protest began on Main Street early in the afternoon with more than 1,000 people. A smaller amount, but still in the hundreds, then proceeded to the interstate. Other protests are planned for this afternoon in Fairfield County in New Canaan and Stamford.
