'Trusted Mentor, Loyal Friend': Community Grapples With Firefighter's Death A Connecticut community is preparing to bury one of its heroes after the longtime Fairfield County firefighter died earlier this week.  John "JB" Pyrek-Bennett, of Monroe, was just 55 when he died on Monday, Oct. 14, surrounded by his family at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, his obituary said. His wife of 29 years and three children survive him. Bennett spent his life giving back to his community, his family said. He served as assistant chief of the Glenbrook Fire Department in Stamford and was a lifetime member of the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department.…

ID Released For Woman Killed In Fairfield County House Fire Fire officials have released the name of a Fairfield County woman who died after a house fire. Sarah Cotter, age 69, of Monroe, was killed shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5 during the fire in the 100 block of Bagburn Hill Road, said Monroe Fire Marshal Bill Davin. Firefighters responded to the fire after a passerby called reporting smoke coming from the home, the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department said. Man Drives Through Garage Wall, Into Basement, Hits Furnance, Monroe Fire Department Says A driver accidentally drove through the wall of his garage and into the basement, authorities said. The incident took place in Fairfield County on Wednesday, Jan. 6, in Monroe at a home on lower Wheeler Road, said the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department.
