CT School Social Worker Caught DWI, Cops Say — But Superintendent Refuses To Address It

A Connecticut woman who was arrested after police said she was driving intoxicated down the wrong side of I-395 at high speeds, nearly crashing into multiple vehicles, reportedly worked as a school social worker, Daily Voice has learned.

Cailin Sorder, 34, of Griswold, was charged on Saturday, March 22, with operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving the wrong way on a limited-access highway, engaging police in a pursuit, interfering with an officer, and first-degree reckless endangerment, Connecticut State Police said.

Sorder reportedly served as a social worker for Wheeler High School in North Stonington. However, Superintendent of North Stonington Schools Troy Hopkins refused to confirm if Sorder still worked at the school, if any disciplinary action had been taken, or if the district was investigating the incident.

"We do not comment on personnel matters," he repeated when reached for comment on Wednesday, March 26.

"I know you have a job to do," he told a reporter. "And I have a job to do, too."

Sorder was still listed as a social worker on the Wheeler High School faculty page on Wednesday, March 26. She was also listed as the varsity girls' volleyball coach.

The school — or someone with access to its social media accounts — has seemingly been scrubbing photos of Sorder from its accounts. An Instagram post celebrating Social Work Week earlier this month removed a photo of Sorder and replaced it with a generic banner after news of her arrest was made public on Tuesday.

Facebook posts mentioning Sorder and Wheeler High School were deleted as well.

This Facebook post from March 8 that included a photo of Cailin Sorder was removed after news of her DUI and wrong-way driving arrest was made public.

Troopers began receiving multiple 911 calls around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday about a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes near Exit 11 on I-395 in Norwich. Witnesses told dispatchers the SUV was speeding and driving dangerously.

Troopers spotted the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan as it approached the Troop E barracks in Montville. When officers tried to pull it over, the driver veered into the police station parking lot in an apparent attempt to flee, officials said.

Troopers rammed Sorder's vehicle to stop it from returning to the highway, police said. No one was injured.

Officers forcibly removed Sorder from the vehicle after she refused commands to exit. She showed signs of intoxication as she was taken into custody, police said.

She was released on a $50,000 bond, authorities said.
