'Trusted Mentor, Loyal Friend': Community Grapples With Firefighter's Death A Connecticut community is preparing to bury one of its heroes after the longtime Fairfield County firefighter died earlier this week.  John "JB" Pyrek-Bennett, of Monroe, was just 55 when he died on Monday, Oct. 14, surrounded by his family at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, his obituary said. His wife of 29 years and three children survive him. Bennett spent his life giving back to his community, his family said. He served as assistant chief of the Glenbrook Fire Department in Stamford and was a lifetime member of the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department.…

Busy Roadway Across CT Dam Reopens To Traffic After Flood Damage Repairs Part of a busy roadway carrying traffic across a dam in Connecticut has been reopened after being damaged by severe flooding, officials announced.  Route 34 in the Fairfield County town of Monroe and New Haven County town of Oxford between Route 111 and Coppermine Road has been reopened after suffering damage from flooding on Sunday, Aug. 18, the Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday, Aug. 27.  The stretch of road carries traffic over the Stevenson Dam on Lake Zoar.  Although traffic can now cross the dam, Route 34 remains closed between Coppermine Ro…

2-Year-Old Shot At Home In Monroe A 2-year-old boy underwent surgery after being shot in the hand and foot at a home in Fairfield County. The incident occurred in Monroe around 9:20 p.m., Tuesday, July 23, on Wheeler Road. According to Monroe Police Lt. Stephen Corrone, officers responded to the intersection of Route 110 and Osborn Lane for a medical emergency call.
